Confusion

June 12, 2025 · Night

The plane miraculously made an emergency landing beside a downtown pedestrian street, fuselage intact. Yet the rescuers were indifferent, my father called to joke about sending my bank PIN, and I even ran into an old friend who shrugged off my talk of "time travel" and simply told me to go eat. Everything seemed normal, yet laced with an unreal absurdity.

I was on a plane for a business trip when a male flight attendant and a mechanic came to me and said we had to switch seats. I almost got angry and demanded a reason. He looked at me without speaking, tears welling in his eyes, and the cabin lights went out. I understood what it meant.

Not wanting to alarm the other passengers, I quietly asked whether the plane was going to crash. He did not deny it. I took the hint and sat by the window they had assigned me. A middle-aged man who seemed to be crew sat in the next seat. He said calmly that the odds were about ten percent, the emergency landing site was somewhere in the city, the altitude was very high, and soon the engines would die—everything would depend on the pilot pulling up manually. I was not very frightened, since there was nothing I could change. I took out my phone and sent a message in the family group chat: "I'm gonna die first, what rotten luck, the plane's going down."

No one replied. The plane began dropping vertically, as if it had lost all power. Some passengers were terrified, some crying. I felt exhilarated—thrilling yet helpless, about to die. The middle-aged man beside me looked perfectly calm and said nothing. Because the descent was so fast, I entered a halo of light—green dominant, blue secondary. Time moved very slowly inside it; all I could see was this ring of light, like a black hole. I could see myself; I could think about the future, though not actually see it. After a while I would snap back into the noisy cabin, where everyone was terrified. I pulled out my phone to record a video for my parents, even fussing over the angle—ha—wanting my last video to look handsome. The first two takes weren't great so I didn't send them; the third one I sent. In the video I shouted, "Bring it on! I don't believe you can kill me—come on, hurry up!"

Then I entered the halo again, three times back and forth. On the last entry, I knew I would not die. I do not know how I knew, but the conviction was simply there. I looked at the middle-aged man, eyes closed. I could not tell whether he was awaiting death or awaiting rebirth.

With the shaking and jolting of impact, the plane dragged along the ground for a long time. Finally we stopped on a broad road beside a pedestrian street. There was no fire; the fuselage had not broken apart. The rear cabin door opened, and to my surprise the rescuers outside had not even set up a disembarkation ladder. They were completely nonchalant. I was astonished and confused.

When they saw me, they attached the ladder and I walked down. Then my father called, saying I was on the news—emergency landing successful. He joked that next time something like this happened, the first thing I should do is send my Alipay and bank card PINs. He laughed; it was mostly gallows humor. Then someone called my name. I looked and saw a friend I had not seen in a long time; he looked exactly the same. I excitedly told him I had traveled through time inside the plane—I had seen the future. I said the travel was not physical but something your mind thinks of and then sees. He was not very surprised; he smiled and nodded. He said there was a pedestrian street nearby, asked if I was hungry, and told me to go eat. I smiled too and went to eat.

Walking through the food street, I first saw a woman in tight clothing like a swimsuit, half her backside exposed, holding many signs. I walked past her but she did not look at me. Farther in, many people were eating, yet not a single person was talking—dead silent. I sat down and began thinking about what had just happened. Then the noodles arrived; I looked up to grab chopsticks and saw the other diners. None of them spoke; each ate in silence. The me inside the dream was suddenly startled, and it all clicked. Before the plane incident, my surroundings had not looked like this at all. Where on earth was I?
